Patch Blog: Women Rule the DNC

Dispatch from the first day of the convention.

I am writing this from the Time Warner Center in Charlotte during the the first day of the Democratic National Convention. Because I am an alternate delegate I am not on the convention floor and will not be there unless the designated delegate cannot perform her duties.

That being said, I'm happily ensconced in the upper seating area where I have a great view of the stage and the jumbo screens where we watch most of the action anyway.

I am seated near some foreign press and across the arena are the major news stations like MSNBC, Fox, ABC, Telemundo and others. The night is still young, but there have already been many stirring moments.

Right now is the tribute to Sen. Ted Kennedy, which is a definite crowd pleaser, particularly the debates with Kennedy and a then-pro-choice Romney, whom Kennedy called "multiple choice."

Women's issues and healthcare are at the forefront so far, as are LGBT issues. This makes me proud to be a Democrat. P

articularly powerful was Rep. Carolyn Maloney's chant "Where are the women?" Women will be the force to reckon with in this election. More to come later, but right now I'm rocking to Ledisi.
