City Council Honors Arcadia Beautiful Award Winners
Area volunteers also honored for their efforts in ceremony during Tuesday night's City Council meeting.
Whether it’s the stunning landscapes or the kindness in people’s hearts, Arcadia takes pride in keeping itself beautiful. City Council took time Tuesday night to honor some of its finest citizens for doing their part to make the city shine.
The “Arcadia Beautiful Awards” are given to residents who have enhanced the beauty of the community through landscaping and upkeep on their properties.
Greeted by Mayor Gary Kovacic and Jan Shimmin, Chair of the Arcadia Beautiful Commission, winners were given “Winner 2011 Spring Awards” signs to display on their lawns and also received a certificate of commendation and an edible flower arrangement. Sixteen properties were picked on May 26 and judged on overall maintenance, landscaping and use of color.
“This is one of the best volunteer jobs to have,” Shimmin said. “If you’ve never driven the streets of Arcadia, this is the place to be. From the mountains to very tips of South Arcadia you see all these beautiful homes…we are very proud of our city.”

The Mayor also gave recognition to area volunteers for donating their time to helping others through the Foothill Unity Center. The Center has been helping low-income families with health services and food needs since 1980.
In giving out this month's “Believe in Arcadia: Volunteer” awards, the Mayor was joined by , Betty McWilliams, Deputy Director and Raina Martinez, Outreach Director & Volunteer Services.
“Without volunteers Foothill Unity Center doesn’t exist,” Whitenack said. “We are what we are because of the dedicated, caring people that work with us.”
The winners this month included the football team, the Leo Club, the Host Lions Club and Key Club. Each group received certificates of commendation from the Mayor, who's made volunteerism a key theme of his one-year term.
“My focus this term has been promoting volunteerism and volunteer opportunities in Arcadia and recognizing the accomplishments of the many volunteers in our community,” Kovacic said.
