UPDATED: Deputies Detonate Suspected WWII Hand Grenade

UPDATED, 4:47 p.m.: Authorities removed the suspicious device from the location in the 400 block of Jeffries Avenue and took it to be disposed of, according to Sergeant Murray Simpkins of the Temple Sheriff's Station.

The device reportedly resembled a World War II Mach 2 hand grenade and had the pin and spoon still attached to it. The spoon is the handle-like piece of metal that, once the pin is removed and the spoon is continually pressed, prevents the device from exploding until it is thrown.

"Arson-Explosives rendered it safe and took it from the scene to be disposed of," Simpkin said.

The investigation will be limited, because the device's previous owner is deceased. Authorities still could not positively identify the device as a grenade.

No evacuations were ordered. The property where the device was found had concrete walls surrounding it, Simpkin said. Officials left the scene around 12:30 p.m.

PREVIOUSLY: Authorities are still trying to determine if a device resembling a grenade found near Arcadia is a live explosive or not.

Authorities were called to the 400 block of Jeffries Avenue in a county area of Arcadia bordering Monrovia around 11:30 a.m., according to Sergeant Murray Simpkin of the Temple Sheriff's Station. A woman was clearing out some items belonging to a deceased person, possibly a relative, when she discovered the device that resembles a grenade.

"They are not sure exactly what it is, or what it's not. To be on the safe side they called Arson-Explosives to come out  and look at it," Simpkin said.
