Elite Lawn Bowlers Come to Arcadia

Players from across North America come to compete in Southwest Division Open.

Some of the finest lawn bowlers from around the nation and beyond have descended upon the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club this week for the men’s and women’s Southwest Division Open. The tournament is sanctioned by the United States Lawn Bowling Association.

“We have people here from Canada, people from out of state,” said Gayle Plunkett, vice president of the club. “We have from 100 to 150 people here every day. It is three two-day events.”

The event started on Saturday and runs through Thursday. Players are competing in singles, pairs and foursome brackets.

There are 64 entered in the men’s singles competition. There are 53 teams in the men’s pairs bracket and 80 foursome teams.

The women’s tournament features 30 in the singles bracket, 24 pairs and 12 in the foursome bracket. Some of those participating have represented the U.S. in international events.

Located at 405 S. Santa Anita Ave., the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

It will offer free lessons during its Open House May 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
