Santa Anita Park Calls an Audible

Track officials decide to stay with four-day race week schedule through March 20.

The plan to switch to a five-day race week March 2 at Santa Anita has been altered.

announced Tuesday that, pending approval from the California Horse Racing Board, it will remain on a four-day race week schedule through March 20, and will transition to a five-day race week beginning Wednesday, March 23.

The five-day race week would remain in effect through closing day, April 17.

Santa Anita’s 76-day winter/spring meeting began on Dec. 26, and with the exception of holiday Mondays, racing has been conducted on a Thursday through Sunday basis.

The plan to go to a five-day race week on March 2 was scrapped for a variety of reasons, Santa Anita officials said in a press release.

Santa Anita Park, an iconic figure on the Southern California sports landscape, first opened on Dec. 25, 1934, and is currently in its 74th year of operation.

A number of big races have yet to be run at the current meeting, including the Grade I, $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap on March 5, and the Grade I, $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 9.
