Deputies had been chasing the suspects, who were wanted in connection with a burglary in Hacienda Heights, but backed off before the crash occurred, sheriff's Lt. Joe Mendoza told reporters at the scene.

The victim was his vehicle's sole occupant.

The suspects, all men, were facing possible murder charges, Mendoza said.

"Suspects sometimes have no regard for ... the public and that's why homicide is here now," Mendoza said. "Because when somebody dies in the commission of a felony, we seek to file murder charges on that person."
