Animal Shelter Renovations Approved In Baldwin Park

BALDWIN PARK, CA — Funding was approved Tuesday for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in the final phase of renovations at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center, where roughly 600-700 animals are housed daily.

Upgrades began in early 2015 and over the next 12 months, nearly 100 new kennels will be built to replace old cages in one of four buildings for dogs. Fences will also be installed to protect the public from undomesticated dogs. The cost for the final phase is estimated at $730,000.

"Completely renovating the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center has been a priority for me for over three and a half years," said Supervisor Hilda Solis. "With these renovations, L.A. County is creating a warm and welcoming environment that allows for higher-level public service and encourages adoption."

County shelters offer adoption services for strays and pets turned in by owners who are no longer able to keep the animals.

The Baldwin Park shelter at 4275 N. Elton St. includes four buildings of dog kennels, two cat buildings, an animal clinic and administrative offices for animal control personnel.

Dogs in the building scheduled for renovation will be transferred to other animal care centers and outside agencies and the department will also look for additional foster owners.
