Bear Captured After Roaming Baldwin Park Found Dead

The 3-year-old bear was reportedly hit by a vehicle in Littlerock.

The bear that roamed the streets of Baldwin Park early Friday morning was reportedly hit and killed by a vehicle in Littlerock in the Antelope Valley on Tuesday morning, officials said.

Officials with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife positively identified the bear by the ear tag the creature had, said Andrew Hughan, information officer with Fish and Wildlife.

Officials were called to a home in the 8500 block of East Avenue U 5 in Littlerock a little after noon, Oct. 15, to a report of a bear sleeping on the resident's front porch, Hughan said.

Officials approached the bear cautiously and once they realized it wouldn't move they determined it was badly injured and had been killed, Hughan said.

After determining the 3-year-old, 275-pound bear was not killed by a weapon, officials determined its injuries were consistent with being hit by a vehicle, Hughan said.

After being captured in Baldwin Park Oct. 11, the bear was taken to near the end of Highway 39 in the Angeles National Forest where it awoke and traveled roughly 40 miles to Littlerock, Hughan said.
