It happens twice a year. It’s been happening for the past 10 years. Bugs from all over the Southland and beyond converge at the Irwindale Event Center to swap, show, shine and drag race. Volkswagen Beetles, Microbuses, Squarebacks, Fastbacks, Things—all things air-cooled by Volkswagen. Hot VWs Drag Day is more for the Volkswagen gearhead than the concours crowd. There is no car show in the conventional sense, but there are plenty of cars being shown off. There are vendors galore as well as VW hobbyists spreading out their collection of parts to swap. Last, but not least, old Bugs are lined up to peel down Irwindale’s 1/8th mile drag strip faster than most modern muscle cars. If you’re a fan of the old Bugs, it’s sensory overload at Hot VWs Drag Day.
