Saints Marches Past Baldwin Park, 52-50

The Baldwin Park High School boys’ basketball team dropped its second game in as many days Monday night, falling to the San Dimas Saints 52-50 in a Valle Vista League matchup.  The Braves lost its league opener last Friday to Nogales 58-30.

The common denominator in both defeats was the inability to score in the second half and in Monday’s game the inability to hit free throws in the second half.

Trailing 33-16 at the half, the Saints marched through the Braves defense and outscored the Braves 36-17 in the second half to steal the victory.

Chris Giron led the way for the Braves, scoring 11 while William Trinidad and Corey Garcia contributed 10 and nine points, respectively.

It was a tale of two halves as Baldwin Park had everything going its way outscoring San Dimas 21-10 in the first and 12-6 in the second to take a commanding 33-16 lead heading into halftime, but couldn’t find the basket as they could only muster 17 points in the second half due to empty possessions and missed free throws.

Baldwin Park went 5 of 12 from the charity stripe, but they missed three of the first four in the fourth quarter to allow the Saints to chip back into the lead.

Greyson McGee and the Saints’ two big men Omar Nasari and Jonathon Austin contributed 13 of San Dimas’ 19 points in the fourth quarter to close the gap, but it was Elias Hernandez’s 3-pointer with 16 seconds to go that proved to be the game winner.

Ryan Ocampo led everybody in scoring with 15, and McGee added 12.  Hernandez and Tony Hugo each contributed eight and six points, respectively for the Saints.

Baldwin Park (3-14, 0-2) hosts its third home game in succession tomorrow against the Covina Colts.  Tipoff is at 6:30 pm.
