Sierra Vista Outlast Riverside Notre Dame in 8-5 Slugfest

The Sierra Vista Dons’ baseball team began its CIF Division 5 playoff run on a positive note, outlasting Riverside Notre Dame in an 8-5 slugfest Friday afternoon.
“It was a crazy game out there, “Dons head coach Brett Stevens said. “With a lot of offense.”
The Titans scored first as Tyler Peacock would single and then scored on Evan Montag’s RBI single which scored both Peacock and Dalton Weeks to take an early 2-0 lead.

Sierra Vista, however, responded back in the bottom of the first inning to score three runs to take the 3-2 lead. After Nijcholas Herrejohn reached via hit by pitch, Oscar Huerta would single. Christian Novelo’s RBI single
would drive in both Huerta and Herrejohn. Novelo would then score on a sacrifice fly by Macrin Gallardo.
Dons’ starting pitcher GiovanniRivera settled down after giving up the two runs in the first inning. He would shut out the Titans for the next five innings giving up five hits along the way. The Titans would finally take advantage of a fatigued Rivera in the sixth to score twice to close the gap to 6-5.

Rivera pitched six innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits three strikeouts, no walks, and one hits batsman.
Once again Sierra Vista responded in the bottom of the sixth to score twice, thanks to two hit batsmen (including one to score the first run).
Novelo would single. Sierra Vista would load the bases when Joey
Vahl would walk Gallardo and then hit Fredy Ramirez to score Novelo. Gallardo would then score on a sacrifice fly by Eric Hernandez.
“Gio (Rivera) didn’t have his best stuff today,” Stevens said. “We know that and we had to play good defense and score runs to win. We just wanted him to get the last guy out so we can get to (Jesus) Terrazas.”
Sierra Vista faces the winner of the Cathedral/Ontario Christian matchup in Tuesday’s second round.
The Dons have not any luck in the second round of the playoffs in the as they were ousted in each of the past three years.
“Our goal, of course is to get past the second round,” Stevens said, “but we will have to play perfect ball to get past anyone in the second round.”
