Suspect in Baldwin Park OIS Eluded Capture

Baldwin Park police officers fired shots today at a 20-year-old man who allegedly pointed a gun them, then fled.

Police received a call around 11 a.m. about a man allegedly smoking illegal narcotics in the 4400 block of Merced Avenue, near Los Angeles Street, said Baldwin Park police Lt. David Reynoso, a watch commander.

"When officers arrived at the scene and approached the suspect, the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officers,'' Reynoso told City News Service. "The officers responded by each firing at least one round at the suspect.''

Neither officer wounded the suspect and none of the officers were injured, Reynoso said.

"The suspect then ran from the scene, jumped over several fences and fled into the neighborhood,'' Reynoso said. "We then brought in a canine unit and with the help of the police dog began a house-to-house search for the suspect.''

The suspect eluded capture and the search was called off at 5:20 p.m., Reynoso said.

"However, we are working on a ID of the suspect and he threw something away as he was running so we are using that to try and identify him,'' Reynoso said.

Reynoso declined to identify what object the suspect had discarded.

The suspect was described as about 5 feet 7 inches tall, and weighing about 150 pounds, Reynoso said. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and white shorts with a blue stripe.
