Triple Digit Temperatures Will Continue Tuesday

Temperatures surpassed 100 degrees in the San Fernando, San Gabriel and Santa Clarita valleys Monday because of surface high pressure building over the Great Basin that brought a period of weak offshore flow, according to the National Weather Service.

A red flag warning indicating a high risk of wildfire remained in effect today in the Santa Clarita Valley and the the San Gabriel mountains as temperatures again headed past the century mark in some areas of the Southland amid high winds, low humidity and an abundance of bone- dry vegetation.

The National Weather Service said the warning, which went into effect at 6 a.m. Monday, would remain in force until 6 tonight in the Santa Clarita Valley and the San Gabriels, including the Angeles National Forest in Los Angeles County and the Los Padres National Forest in Ventura County.   

The highs were 109 in Saugus, 107 in Chatsworth and Woodland Hills, 106
in Northridge and Pasadena, 105 in Burbank and Van Nuys, 103 in Pomona, 102 in San Gabriel and 100 in Acton, according to the National Weather Service.

Today's forecast highs are a few degrees below Monday's, and temperatures are expected to steadily dip over coming days. By Friday, they could be running below normal, according to the NWS.

But until a cooling trend takes hold, forecasters urged Southland residents to stay safe in part by following some simple tips:

   -- Wear loose, light-weight, light-colored clothing;
   -- Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids;
   -- Avoid strenuous activity in the heat;
   -- Never leave people or pets in parked vehicles, even with windows open.
