2 Kids Struck Riding E-Scooter, Bike Remain In Critical Condition In Riverside Hospital

RIVERSIDE, CA — A vehicle collided with two juveniles on motorized bikes Tuesday evening, leaving both children with major injuries, the Riverside Police Department shared.

Just after 7:45 p.m., the police received reports of a crash at the intersection of Arlington Avenue and Mitchell Avenue.

Riverside Police officers responded, along with the Riverside Fire Department, and located two 14-year-old juveniles who were riding an e-scooter and an e-moto when they were struck by a vehicle.

"Both juveniles were transported to a local hospital with major injuries," said Riverside Police Det. Steven Espinosa. They remain in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon, he said.

The preliminary investigation revealed an 88-year-old man was driving a silver Lexus westbound on Arlington Avenue when his vehicle struck the two juveniles near the intersection of Arlington Avenue and Mitchell Avenue.

"The two juveniles, riding an E-Scooter and an E-Moto, were traveling southbound on Mitchell Avenue and were attempting to cross the street from one side to the other.

It is unknown at this time whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.

Traffic Bureau Sergeant Tim Jensen commented on this incident.

“Whenever a collision involves a vehicle and riders, the potential for serious injury is significant,” Jensen said. “We urge everyone, regardless of how they are traveling, to follow the rules of the road, remain alert to their surroundings, and use caution when entering an intersection. Taking a few extra seconds to make sure you are traveling safely can help prevent a devastating collision.”

The Riverside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.
