PERRIS, CA — A 30-year-old Beaumont man involved in a pursuit died from his injuries after a shooting at the end of the chase with Riverside County sheriff's deputies in Perris earlier this week, authorities said.
Karim Shakeel Ali was in the intensive care unit at a local hospital when he died Tuesday from injuries sustained during a shooting involving deputies on Monday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
An autopsy was performed, which indicated the fatal shot was self-inflicted, authorities said Friday.
The sheriff's Force Investigations Detail received the coroner's report after initiating its probe into the shooting, which involved an undisclosed number of patrol deputies who forcibly stopped Ali while he was allegedly trying to flee through Mead Valley.
The incident began just before 3 p.m. on Monday, when a person — who was not identified — called 911 from a property in the 5000 block of Western Way, saying Ali was suffering from a "mental health episode" and was headed to the residence with a gun, authorities said.
Deputies responded to the call and quickly located Ali's vehicle on northbound Interstate 215 at Placentia Avenue, where they signaled him to stop, which he ignored, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
He allegedly fled about four miles, exiting the freeway into Mead Valley, where he turned west. A K9 unit extended a grappler device beneath the rear of Ali's car, causing him to veer out of control and come to an immediate stop at the intersection of Harvill and Oleander avenues, authorities said.
"As deputies gave commands to the man, he produced a handgun, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred," the authorities said.
No deputies were injured.
Ali was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Officials did not specify whether or how many of the shots fired by deputies actually struck Ali, and it was unclear when he allegedly turned the pistol on himself.
