BANNING, CA — A passenger in a vehicle was struck in her arm by gunfire Saturday while traveling on the westbound Redlands (10) Freeway in Banning, authorities said.

According to the CHP, a white Chevrolet Suburban was traveling in the No. 2 lane when a black sedan in the No. 1 lane pulled alongside the Suburban and a male passenger leaned out of the right rear passenger side window with a handgun and fired.

The victim was struck in her left arm by the gunfire, and the driver of the Suburban subsequently exited the freeway at Highland Springs Avenue and stopped at a nearby gas station.

The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to the CHP.

The investigation prompted a temporary full closure of I-10 around 5:45 a.m., diverting westbound traffic off the freeway at Sunset Avenue. All lanes were reopened just before 9 a.m.

The CHP's Border Division Investigative Services Unit assumed the investigation. It was unclear if any arrests had been made as of Saturday afternoon.

Anyone with additional information about the gunfire was encouraged to contact the CHP Border Division Major Crimes Unit at 858-944-6300.
