BANNING, CA — Sam's Club will anchor a new shopping center coming to Banning, which city leaders said will generate more jobs and boost tax revenue.

The new Sam's Club will be built at the Sunset Crossroads development, a mixed-use commercial project which the city passed 4-1 on March 10 despite strong opposition from local residents.

Sam's Club is expected to serve as "a catalyst" for drawing more businesses and amenities to Sunset Crossroads. The project is expected to also generate "significant" tax revenue that would benefit the community, according to a news release from the City of Banning.

"Sam's Club will help attract more businesses and amenities to the area while supporting long‑term economic growth, improved infrastructure, and enhanced public services," city leaders said on Facebook.

Among some of the provisions added when the Sunset Crossroads development was approved in March, Banning Unified School District will receive $5 million in funding, the city will receive an upfront payment of $3 million for city services, a new fire station will be built to reduce response times, and a new public park and 98 acres of preserved open space will be developed, according to the city.

"This is a tremendous win for the City of Banning and a direct reflection of the hard work we've put into making our community an attractive place to invest," said Mayor Richard Royce.

"Sam's Club is a world class retailer, and their commitment to Banning means good-paying jobs, and more affordable options for our families."

City officials said additional details about the Sunset Crossroads development, including timelines, construction schedules, and community meetings will be announced later.
