RIVERSIDE, CA — A possibly armed man barricaded himself inside a Riverside residence Monday, prompting a standoff with police, but the suspect ultimately surrendered to authorities and no injuries were reported.
Officers responded Monday morning to the 2400 block of 11th Street following a "911 hang-up with a male stating he needed police," a Riverside Police Department representative told City News Service.
Arriving officers approached the residence and saw the man make a motion as if he was grabbing a firearm from his body, police said. The man, whose name was not released, retreated into the residence's yard, and officers subsequently lost sight of him.
Officers established a perimeter around the home and temporarily closed 11th Street from Victoria Avenue to 10th Street, and Sedgwick Avenue from 11th Street to 10th Street.
With assistance from the department's Emergency Negotiators team, the man eventually came out of the residence and was detained without incident shortly before 10 a.m.
Officers deemed the individual was a possible danger to himself and placed him on a psychiatric hold for a mental health evaluation.
