Fire Crews Halt Blaze Near Runway At RivCo Airport

HEMET, CA — Firefighters stopped a brush fire that erupted Friday afternoon near the end of the main runway at Hemet-Ryan Airport after it charred about two acres, fire officials said.

The blaze was reported just before 4 p.m. near Runway 5/23, according to the Hemet Fire Department.

Multiple fire engines from Hemet Fire Department responded to the blaze, with assistance from the Riverside County Fire Department, which sent several crews and a Cal Fire water-dropping helicopter to make runs.

Around 5 p.m., fire officials said the brusher's forward rate of spread had been halted.

The Cal Fire helicopter returned to its pad at the Hemet-Ryan Airport moments later, while ground personnel established containment lines.

No injuries or damage was reported.

The airport remained open, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
