Deputies Shoot Person Suffering Mental Health Crisis In Moreno Valley

MORENO VALLEY, CA — A person experiencing a mental health crisis was shot by Riverside County sheriff's deputies Friday afternoon after allegedly pointing a firearm at officers, authorities reported.

The shooting occurred shortly after 4:10 p.m. in the 11000 block of Villa Hermosa. Deputies from the Moreno Valley Sheriff's Station, accompanied by a clinical therapist from the department's Community Behavioral Assessment Team, responded to a call regarding a person experiencing a mental health episode.

As deputies and the therapist spoke with the person who called 911, the subject in mental health crisis exited a home on the street and pointed a gun at officers, according to the sheriff's department. Deputies opened fire, striking the person.

Deputies provided emergency medical aid at the scene until paramedics arrived. The person was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

No deputies were injured in the incident. Authorities have not released the identity of the person shot.

In accordance with department policy, the deputies involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave. Their names have not been released.
