RIVERSIDE, CA — A 59-year-old Moreno Valley man died over the weekend after driving the wrong way on state Route 91 and causing a multi-vehicle head-on crash in Riverside, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The wrong-way driver, identified by the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner's Bureau as Daniel Romo Jr., was traveling westbound in the eastbound carpool lane of SR-91 near University Avenue around 9:31 a.m. Sunday when his brown Ford Flex struck a Honda Civic head-on.
The impact redirected the Honda into the center divider, while Romo's vehicle continued into the second lane and collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla.
Romo was transported to Riverside Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:14 a.m.
The drivers of the Honda and Toyota were also taken to a local hospital with injuries ranging from minor to major. Authorities have not released their identities or updated conditions.
Whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the incident remains under investigation.
