MORENO VALLEY, CA — New wireless internet hot spots that enable users to go online for free are now publicly available throughout Moreno Valley, officials announced Thursday.
The municipality's "ILoveMoVal" wireless network has expanded to Parque Amistad, Vista Lomas Park and Hound Town Dog Park, where so-called "WiFi Gardens" offer residents and visitors the opportunity to access the internet without entering a password or going through a paywall, as long as they have a device that's internet ready.
The network is not 5G but provides high speed connectivity, according to officials.
"Access to reliable internet is essential for education, employment, accessing services and staying connected," Mayor Ulises Cabrera said. "Expanding our WiFi Gardens gives more Moreno Valley residents another convenient way to access the digital tools and resources they need to participate fully in our community and economy."
It's the city's latest expansion of free internet since WiFi Gardens were added to 14 locations earlier this year.
"Bringing free WiFi to our communities gives residents another valuable resource right where they live and spend time," Councilwoman Cheylynda Barnard said. "Whether students need to complete schoolwork, families need to access important services, or residents simply need to stay connected, these WiFi Gardens help make technology more accessible to everyone."
Further expansion is anticipated.
Along with free online access, some residents may also qualify for free computers, under a program funded by the Community Action Partnership of Riverside County.
