Banning High opened summer workouts on Monday.

Monday wasn’t just another opening day of fall workouts for Banning High’s football program.

Monday was the very first time the Broncos stormed onto their new state-of-the-art football facility.

It is complete with electronic scoreboard, press box, synthetic field, two on-the-field locker rooms and two concession facilities.

“We don’t know a lot about this group yet,” McRitchie said. “It’s a good group.  We don’t have huge numbers but we are optimistic.”

The football field at nearby Nicolette Middle School used to serve as the home field for the Broncos. The team transitioned to the aging Nicolette field every day after school and suited up in a storage bin for practices and home games.

“We’ve gone from changing clothes in a storage bin with a dirt floor to an air conditioned facility,” McRitchie said. “We did our halftime stuff in there too. It’s a huge difference for us.”

In addition to the new football stadium the school’s new sports facility includes two baseball fields, two softball fields, and basketball courts for PE classes. Tennis courts are on the way.

“It’ just a huge step,” McRitchie said. “We are very fortunate that the community stepped up like this.”
