Banning Pass Little League Brings Home District Flag

The team faces the District 72 champs Saturday in Yucaipa.

In just its first season, the Banning Pass Little League 11-12-year-old team -- the same age group that ends up playing in the Little League World Series in front of a national television audience -- is one step closer to playing at the Western Regional Finals in San Bernardino.

The team of all-stars won the District 58 tournament Wednesday night in Yucca Valley, looking strong as they went undefeated in tournament play.

“This is the first time the District Flag has been in the Pass since Banning Little Leauge won it in 1987,” said league founder Richard Soriano. “It is just nice to have something like this our first year running. This is great for the kids, our league and our community.”

The original Banning Little League was dissolved in the mid 90s. Upon re-forming the league expanded its boundaries to range from Cherry Valley to Whitewater, helping draw 474 children in year one.

Manager Steve Duro will lead his youngsters in their first sectional game on Saturday at the Bryant Glen Sports Complex in Yucaipa against Corona National Little League, the District 72 champions.

The game begins at 5 p.m.
