Banning Softball Struggles Through Spring Break

Broncos finish week with 17-4 loss.

Spring Break is supposed to be all about fun and relaxation.

It hasn’t been for Banning High’s softball team. Some players went on vacation while others stayed, played, and practiced, through it.

On Thursday the effects were loud and clear during Banning’s 17-4 loss to Rim of the World.

“The week has had a terrible toll on us,” Banning Coach Maso Lara said. “We’re trying but it’s been a bad week.”

The Broncos were sluggish and lacked intensity and Rim of the World showed little mercy. ROW scored four runs in the third, three in the fourth and then blew it open with 10 runs in the sixth.

It was a tough game for pitcher Lara Becerra and outfielder Thalen Thibault. Becerra got little help defensively and Thibault played despite suffering from the flu.

“There isn’t a lot you can do,” Coach Lara said. “We only had seven players on Monday. And she (Thibault) was real sick.”

Andrea Villegas and Laura Becerra crossed the plate for Banning, which has now lost five of its last seven games. The Broncos could have used a win over Rim, which sits in third place in the Mountain Valley League. Banning (2-6, 6-9) is in fourth.

Now the Broncos actually get a break in the form of a three day weekend. Perhaps it will reinvigorate the team.

“We have three days and we get people back,” Coach Lara said. “We can get some rest.”
