Banning Track Team Ends Regular Season

Deonte Little, Endazsia Harris and Cheyenne Wright were winners at Shadow Hills on Monday.

It’s been a long, hard season for the track teams at Banning High School.

The school’s field was often flooded because of rains, thus unusable.

So the Broncos did what they could. That effort managed to produce two Mountain League wins.

“We have been doing okay,” said Banning coach Eje Ash, whose team defeated Rim of the World and Jurupa Hills. “We didn’t have any jumping pits this year. Because of weather conditions, our track was flooded most of the time because of rains.”

Things should improve next season when the Broncos get to use a new track and field, which is nearly complete.

“We have a lot of young talent, a lot of freshmen and sophomores,” Ash said. “We didn’t get a lot of training time this year and we are looking forward to next season.”

The Broncos took part in their last regular season meet on Monday, a non-league meet at Indio Shadow Hills. The Broncos will compete in the Mountain Valley League finals on May 5 at Redlands Citrus Valley.

One of Banning’s bright spots this season has been Deonte Little. The sophomore is the MVL favorite in the long jump. His best this season was a 21-2 against Jurupa Hills.

“It’s been a good season,” Little said. “I’ve tried to be consistent. I’ve had my good days and my bad days have still been in the 19’s.”

Little was a double-winner at Shadow Hills. He won the high (5-4) and long jump (19-0).

In the girls meet, Banning won the 4x100 relay and received first place finishes from Endazsia Harris in the 100 (13.25) and Cheyenne Wright  in the 1600 (6:20.88). Wright also placed second in the 400 (1:06.00).
