Beaumont City Leadership Discusses Historical Awareness

Discussion with the members of the San Gorgonio Pass Historical Society directs attention toward historical awareness in Beamont

More than 40 people were present at the San Gorgonio Pass Historical Society meeting on March 14 to discuss historical awareness in the city of Beaumont with Mayor Julio Martinez III and City Manager Todd Parton.

According to Parton, the city does not currently have historical preservation-related ordinances or guidelines, nor officially designated landmarks of historical importance.

Martinez suggested an ad hoc Mayor’s Committee, which would include a member from the historical society, to explore the issue. The city leaders said historical preservation-related ordinances take time and a great deal of study.

During a question-and-answer session following remarks by the mayor and city manager, the audience generally agreed that there is a long road toward substantive historically related ordinances, but attendees stated it was time to start a process of recognizing buildings and other landmarks of historical importance within the city and voiced concern that much has already been lost.

“This meeting was a very encouraging start to what we hope will be an ongoing dialogue with Beaumont city leadership,” said San Gorgonio Pass Historical Society President Sean Balingit. “The society greatly appreciated the time committed to our meeting by Mayor Martinez and City Manager Parton and the productive conversation they had with community members in attendance.”

The historical society will host a similar meeting with Banning Mayor Art Welch and City Manager Doug Schulze on Thursday, June 13, 2019, 7 p.m., at Beaumont Woman’s Club.

The society’s next meeting is Thursday, April 11, 7 p.m., at Beaumont Woman’s Club and will be an oral history workshop – how to record, what to ask and how to archive a conversation – presented by Tony Pierucci, curator of history for Riverside County Parks Interpretive Services.

Historical society meetings are free and open to non-members and friends of the society. Information about the society’s ongoing activities may be found on the San Gorgonio Pass Historical Society Facebook page.
