Beaumont Library Wins DK Makerspace Sweepstakes!

One of fifty lucky libraries and schools nationwide to win

Beaumont Library District was one of fifty lucky libraries and schools nationwide to win the DK Makerspace Sweepstakes. This random drawing was announced last June and the library’s entry was submitted by Children’s Librarian, Nell Secor, who was notified of the selection on January 5.

DK (Dorling Kindersley) publishers, a subsidiary of Penguin Random House LLC, will be giving each winning library and school a Makey Makey Makerspace Classic Kit (valued at $50), a $200 library of DK books (see photo), and a $300 American Express card to buy makerspace supplies.

According to Ms. Secor, "I was very excited to learn that the online form I filled out resulted in a WIN for Beaumont Library! We will be using the gift card to purchase additional Makey Makey kits and related supplies. With these kits, we hope to implement exciting "Makerspace" programs that will engage tweens and teens as a means of enhancing their art, engineering, and technology skills."

The new programs will be an expansion of Beaumont Library’s current offerings, which have included educational STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) activities for pre-teens, such as Lego challenges, building gingerbread houses, etc. (typically held at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday).
