Dramatic Rescue Saves Crash Victim Amid Brush Fire Near Banning

BANNING, CA — A brush fire that erupted Monday afternoon south of Banning was caused by a vehicle that went over the side of Highway 243 and burst into flames, authorities said.

The blaze, dubbed the Panorama Fire, was first reported just after noon in the area of Mt. Edna Road and Highway 243, according to the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.

A bystander who witnessed the crash climbed down rocky terrain into a ravine to pull an occupant from the wreckage, according to fire officials.

A Cal Fire helicopter hoisted the injured motorist from the scene to a waiting ground ambulance. An update on the victim's medical status was not immediately available, but fire officials said the person suffered moderate injuries.

"Fire crews assisted the bystander back up the hillside, where they were evaluated by paramedics and declined further treatment or transport," the department said in a statement.

As of 4:45 p.m., the fire had burned 23 acres and was 5% contained.

"Hose line and retardant are in place around the perimeter," the fire department reported. "Firefighters remain on scene working to strengthen containment and extinguish hot spots."

Highway 243 is expected to remain closed until approximately 8 p.m. Monday, according to officials.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

No evacuations were ordered, and no structural damage was reported.
