Cabazon Sheriff's Station Has A New Commander

Welcome, Capt. Joseph Pemberton!

CABAZON, CA — Sheriff Stan Sniff promoted Lieutenant Joseph Pemberton to the rank of Captain [Thursday] in Riverside. Captain Pemberton will command the Cabazon Station, filling an existing vacancy created by part of a series of routine transfers and retirements of senior level personnel.

The Cabazon Station provides police service to the unincorporated county communities of Cabazon, Cherry Valley, Poppet Flats, San Gorgonio, San Timoteo Canyon, Twin Pines, and Whitewater. The Cabazon Station also provides police services under contract to the city of Calimesa and the Morongo Indian Reservation. Captain Pemberton will serve as the Chief of Police for the city of Calimesa and is a 21-year veteran of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Captain Pemberton joined the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in February 1996. He attended the 132nd Basic Peace Officer’s Academy. After graduation from the Academy, Captain Pemberton was assigned to the Blythe Jail. In April 1998, he was transferred to the Moreno Valley Station, where he held assignments in Patrol and the Special Enforcement Team. He also had a collateral duty assignment to the Department’s Emergency Services Team (now SWAT). Captain Pemberton was promoted to Investigator within Moreno Valley Station in July 2004.

In September 2004, Captain Pemberton was transferred to the Central Homicide Unit (CHU). There, he investigated homicides across the county, as well as Officer Involved Shootings (OIS).

In December 2005, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and transferred to the Jurupa Valley Station. He was assigned to Patrol Operations until January 2007. He was then transferred to the Special Investigations Bureau (SIB), Narcotics Division, where he remained until August 2013.

Captain Pemberton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in August 2013, and assigned to the Jurupa Valley Station. While at the Jurupa Valley Station, he oversaw Investigations, and served as the liaison to the City of Eastvale, acting as their Assistant Chief of Police. In January 2015, Captain Pemberton was transferred to the Lake Elsinore Station where he oversaw Patrol Operations and the Investigations Bureau, before taking the role of Administration Lieutenant and the liaison to the City of Lake Elsinore.

Captain Pemberton holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from California State University, San Bernardino and a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Phoenix. Captain Pemberton is a military veteran with over 14 years of service in United States Air Force. He and his wife Cassie, along with their two children, Jacob and Jordan, live in the city of Murrieta.
