A stolen car being pursued by police early Tuesday ran a red light and struck another vehicle, killing that vehicle’s driver, San Bernardino police said.

Damian Garcia, 18, and his passenger, Ricardo Cerna, 21, both of San Bernardino, were arrested on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle and felony evading, Lt. Rich Lawhead said. The men could face additional charges related to the death after the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office reviews the case.

The victim’s name was not released.

The incident began at 4:42 a.m. when police spotted a stolen car at Base Line and Sierra Avenue, Lawhead said. The vehicle failed to stop and drove north to 30th Street and then west on 30th. It entered I-215 going south and exited at 5th Street.

That’s where the suspects failed to stop for the red light and the vehicle that was in their path, hitting it broadside, Lawhead said.

The suspects were taken to the hospital after complaining of pain.

Another example as to why high speed police pursuits are too dangerous to continue.
