Customizing Your Medicare Coverage

Customizing your Medicare coverage with an Advantage plan might give you the specific healthcare options you need.

Last week we wrote about some of the ways you can soon obtain healthcare coverage through the Affordable Care Act. But some seniors, especially those already eligible for Medicare coverage, might be wondering what kinds of things their existing healthcare insurance will provide. Even for a single plan such as Medicare, the answer is unfortunately somewhat complex. The situation gets worse when we consider the many add-on plans that are available; some at low or no cost to the patient. However, despite the complexity of searching for the right coverage; the increased benefits available to you are likely well worth the trouble.

These plans, termed Medicare Advantage plans, allow recipients to customize the types of coverage available to them. There are many options and you should shop several to compare prices and service levels. One important thing to keep in mind is the type of service you actually need. Many Medicare Advantage plans are designed to provide niche coverage for people with special needs; however this coverage might come at the expense of other more “regular” features of traditional Medicare.

One such specialized plan is provided by Scan Health Plans. Operating in Arizona and California, Scan offers coverage tailored to individuals who have recently been discharged from a hospital stay and who need targeted home health care options such as meal preparation and transportation assistance.
