Lambs Canyon Fire Spreads To 50 Acres Near Beaumont [PHOTOS, VIDEO]

BEAUMONT, CA — A wildfire broke out Monday morning along SR-79/Lambs Canyon Road near Beaumont, prompting an hours-long highway closure in the region before fire crews got a handle on the blaze. The fire, dubbed the Extension Incident, burned north of Gilman Springs Road in between Beaumont and San Jacinto and had spread to an estimated 50 Acres by 12:45 p.m., according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The fire, first reported around 10:30 a.m., was fueled by strong winds in the region, which was under a red flag warning. The latest updates from fire officials indicate the incident was 100 percent contained as of 6 p.m.

California Highway Patrol officials temporarily closed down the highway shortly after the fire broke out, as flames were burning on both sides of the roadway. As of 3 p.m., CHP logs indicated the road was reopened.

Fire officials said the blaze burned at a "moderate" rate of speed. Crews including 214 firefighters, four air tankers and three helicopter were sent to the scene. Firefighters were expected to remain on the scene throughout Monday night.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
