Flock of Seagulls' Mike Score Talks Theft, And Making New Gear Work at Beaumont Concert (Photos)

The 1980s band A Flock of Seagulls took to theĀ stage in Beaumont this week, making the best of an unfortunate situation that had them performingĀ with a case of the nerves they haven't had to deal with in some time.

The group– whose hits includeĀ I Ran (So Far Away), Space Age Love Song,Ā andĀ The More You Live, the More You Love– recently made headlinesĀ when theyĀ had a van filled withĀ $70,000 worth of equipment stolen from a hotel parking lotĀ inĀ Downey on July 21.

That theft made for an interesting experience, since the bandĀ had to buy and borrow all new equipment— most of which they didn't have time to properly sync up before Beaumont's Wednesday night show, according to lead singer Mike Score.

"And, it’s kind of funny but when we did a gig like tonight, it’s actually quite nerve-wracking and exciting, which we’re not used to anymore because we have everything so locked down," Ā Score told Banning-Beaumont Patch following the show. Ā "And then suddenly to be playing a different drum kit, a different keyboard, and not having time to make it our own, it’s kind of like ā€˜oh, what’s going to happen?'"

"So it’s kind of fun and it takes us back to when we didn’t really know what we were doing— because we didn’t," he said in good spirits. Ā "On a road band like this, you just have to take it as it comes and just say ā€˜it doesn’t matter, next song’ and cover up as best you can and do what you can."

Score told Patch that though they had to deal with the equipment issue, Flock of Seagulls had a great time doing what they love.

"It’s what a band’s all about," he said. Ā "Just going for it and the crowd seemed to enjoy it—from our perspective, that’s all we care about."

As for the missing gear, Score said he is hopeful that it will be recovred, but doesn't think it's likely.

"I don’t know what’s wrong with people, they just take stuff that’s not theirs," he said. Ā "And in the end, yin and yang and karma should get them.Ā  But we won’t get our gear back, I don’t think."

Flock of Seagulls performed Wednesday, July 31 at Beaumont's Summer Concert Series, which is free for the community to attend.Ā Ā Following their show, another 80s band— Berlin— took the stage.
