By clicking on the library’s website (bld.lib.ca.us), you could earn a scholarship just like Audra Amaya and Steve Stelter … and become one of our latest success stories!
Ready to graduate
At 31, Amaya is a married mother of two young daughters. She left high school in the eleventh grade and tried homeschooling and continuation programs for a while. But the programs just weren’t a good fit for her.
About a year ago, Amaya saw a Facebook post about Beaumont Library offering the Career Online High School program. She signed up, hopped on her laptop, and began doing her lessons and homework. By early this summer, Amaya will collect her diploma, a career certificate in office management, and explore taking some college courses. She’s interested in accounting, office management, and maybe even microbiology.
“Career Online High School is the best option for me,” Amaya said. “I’m actually completing my work and learning while really enjoying the online experience.”
Program overview
The program allows students to learn at their own pace as they take one course at a time while pairing with an academic coach and a coordinator at Beaumont Library. Students learn in an online environment available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students may enroll year-round, and while they work at their own pace, the program must be completed in 18 months. About 75 percent of Career Online High School graduates attend either a two-year college or a four-year university.
Promise kept
Career Online High School students working with the Beaumont Library have many reasons for wanting to earn their high school diploma.
At 53, corporate executive Stelter has worked his way up the ladder—and is finally earning his high school diploma. He started as a tech for a company selling computers, ran the tech service department, and a decade ago joined the company’s management team.
Stelter has clearly had a successful career. But since his late twenties, something has always gnawed at him: he didn’t complete high school. So when he saw a Facebook post about Career Online High School, he decided to act and signed up.
“At this stage in life, it isn’t something that I have to do,” Stelter says about earning his diploma. “It’s simply a matter of personal growth.”
Like Amaya, he often studies at night and on weekends. Lately, it’s meant solving quadratic equations and figuring out the lengths and angles of triangles using trigonometry. Stelter has completed 70 percent of his work and also plans to receive his diploma early this summer.
So, if you’re ready to get started, log on to the Library’s website (bld.lib.ca.us) and scroll down to the bottom of the page.
