History forum explores areas of concern in San Gorgonio Pass

Attendees discussed issues surrounding future historical awareness and formed a committee to formally list historic landmarks.

About 35 members of the community voiced their interest and concern for historical landmarks, buildings and the preservation of historical collections within the local area at the San Gorgonio Pass Historical Society’s history forum on Dec. 13. Topics discussed included the need for potential funding for and more attention paid to historical sites within future development in Banning, Beaumont, Cabazon, Cherry Valley and the San Timoteo Canyon.

Outreach programs for local youth and a focus on the area’s Hispanic history were also discussed. Attendees underscored the need to have an open dialogue with civic leaders. The group generally agreed that an oral history program should be launched to capture first-hand stories about the community’s heritage, and a committee was formed for the society to formally list important historical landmarks.

Those interested in sharing ideas, suggestions and concerns with the society, may do so on the San Gorgonio Pass Historical Society Facebook page.
