Little Italy

This week, lunch at Matano's Little Italy sandwich shop in Yucaipa. Best Italian deli sandwiches this side of the Atlantic!

This week, Italian Deli Sandwiches at:

Matano’s Little Italy

California St. and Yucaipa Blvd.

A taste of home (if you’re Italian)

Matano’s Little Italy serves up the best Italian deli-style sandwiches this side of the Atlantic, hands down. Kjeld and I have been before, I go as often as I can, but we couldn’t resist swinging by before we wrote about the place, just to double check. :-)

Opened only for limited hours, Little Italy is always packed; today was no exception. Don’t expect fast food, you won’t get it. Instead every item is handcrafted to perfection, the owner’s authentic Italian accent adding flavor to the ambient music while she works. Choose from a selection of sandwiches for your main course or if you prefer grab a dish of delicious homemade lasagna, pasta salad, or other seasonal items.

Don’t ask the owner what’s good however, she’ll tell you to read the menu - it’s all good! For dessert - Italian style cannolis, chocolate mousse with whipped heavy cream, tiramisu, or a selection of cookies. Also available are authentic boxed pastas for home cooking, lady fingers for homemade tiramisu, and a few other assorted cooking ingredients. In short, everything you need for an authentic Italian cafe experience in Yucaipa.

Perfect for lunch

On Friday afternoon Kjeld and I stopped by for lunch. I chose the Romano, complete with turkey and Havarti cheese, and Kjeld had the Vegetarian sandwich with optional cheddar and provolone cheeses. Both were excellent per the norm. For a side, we added a serving of lasagna roll, which we shared, a bowl of chocolate mousse, and two cookies (Kjeld devoured most of the mousse by himself).

While Matano’s has some adorable patio seating, we stuck to the crowded inside tables (like all the other customers) to avoid the scorching midday sun. The patio is equipped with misters and umbrellas, but anyone who’s lived in SoCal for more than three days knows you don’t mess with the summer heat in the middle of the day in June.

The new Yucaipa

After lunch, we took a short walk past the other shops on California street to see what the wind had brought in. It’s been a while since we investigated this part of Yucaipa, our first exploration since the redevelopment on the Boulevard. We’ve heard from several business owners that Yucaipa is turning into a very friendly city to do business with and we’re guessing this has something to do with the City’s efforts to turn around it’s historic uptown section (an area long plagued by deteriorated buildings, some of which have been there since Kjeld lived in the city as  small child, prior to its incorporation). In a couple of week’s we’ll be stopping by Yucaipa’s new and improved Friday evening market night, expect a full report on any delicacies shortly.
