Living Desert Announces 'Year of the Cheetah' Essay Contest

The contest is open to students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Entries must be received by Saturday, October 15.

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is sponsoring an essay contest in honor of its Year of the Cheetah celebrations. The contest is open to students in kindergarten through eighth grade and entries must be received by 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2016.

The theme of the essay contest is “Why Should We Save Cheetahs” and the winning entry receives an annual family membership to The Living Desert and a behind-the-scenes tour for four people of the cheetah exhibit.

Essays will be judged on their ability to answer “Why Should We Save Cheetahs” in an articulate, clear and organized manner. The Living Desert’s judging panel, comprised of employees, will evaluate the submissions. Essays should not exceed 500 words and can be submitted online here.

Beginning October 1, The Living Desert is launching a year-long conservation effort focused on saving the cheetah from extinction. Cheetahs are now extinct in more than 20 countries and are Africa’s most endangered cats. It is estimated that there are less than 7,500 cheetah remaining in the wild.
