Morongo's Thunder & Lightning Powwow Is Back Sept. 23

Some 25,000 people are expected to head out to the annual celebration of Native American culture.

CABAZON, CA – The Morongo Band of Mission Indians is set to host its 26th annual Thunder & Lightning Powwow later this month, and tens of thousands of spectators are expected at the bash.

The three-day event, which is free to attend, begins on Sept. 23-- coinciding with Native American Day in California. An estimated 25,000 people will be in attendance.

Event representatives bill the festivities as a "family-friendly celebration of traditional Native American culture through dance, music and art."

"Each day is highlighted by the Grand Entry, a vibrant parade of color and sound that features hundreds of dancers in traditional regalia swirling to the music of dozens of competitive drum groups and singers," organizers say. "Along with dancers from across North America, spectators will see bird singing and Native American drummers at this alcohol-free event. Dozens of Native American vendors will be on hand selling Indian tacos, tamales and frybread, as well as authentic Native American jewelry, beadwork, pottery, clothing and basketry items."
