MSJC, RivCo Supervisor Talk Workforce Development During Campus Tour

SAN JACINTO, CA — Riverside County Supervisor Yxstian Gutierrez toured Mt. San Jacinto College's San Jacinto Campus this week, meeting with college leaders and discussing ways the county and college could work together on workforce development, youth employment and internships.

Gutierrez, who represents Riverside County's Fifth District, joined MSJC Superintendent/President Tawny Dotson and Board of Trustees Area 2 Trustee Calvin Smith for Monday's campus tour.

College officials said the visit focused on connecting students with regional career opportunities and exploring partnerships to expand youth employment and internship programs.

The group also discussed community health initiatives, including Blue Zones, according to the college.

"Partnerships with Riverside County can create tremendous opportunities for our students and the communities we serve," Dotson said. "Whether we are preparing students for the regional workforce, creating more opportunities for young people to gain valuable experience through employment and internships, or supporting initiatives that contribute to healthier communities, MSJC has an important role to play."

Dotson thanked Gutierrez for his interest in the college's students and for exploring ways the county and college could expand their work together.

During the visit, Gutierrez toured the campus print shop and gymnasium and stopped in art classes where students were working with 3D models. He also spoke with faculty and staff about their work with students.

At the library and Learning Resource Center, Gutierrez learned about student services and programs designed to help remove barriers to completing a college education.

"It was such a pleasure to visit the campus and witness firsthand all the amazing work the leadership and faculty are doing!" Gutierrez said. "In addition to the college's comprehensive student services, San Jacinto campus is at the forefront in general education and CTE programs."

Gutierrez said he looked forward to working with MSJC to develop additional partnerships.

The tour ended at MSJC's new STEM building, where Gutierrez visited biology and microbiology laboratories and learned about the college's science programs and facilities.

MSJC serves approximately 30,000 students annually across a 1,700-square-mile service area. The community college district operates campuses in San Jacinto, Menifee Valley, Temecula Valley and the San Gorgonio Pass.
