Oral History Techniques Taught at Historical Society Workshop
Attendees learned how to record, what to ask and how to archive valuable conversations with friends and relatives about local history
More than 30 people learned how to record, what to ask and how to archive valuable conversations at the April 11 oral history workshop hosted by the San Gorgonio Pass Historical Society and conducted by Tony Pierucci, curator of history for Riverside County Parks Interpretive Services. The historical society has launched an ongoing oral history program to preserve the information and memories that long-time Pass area citizens can share. The evening’s program was designed to educate members and friends of the society so that they may interview friends and relatives and contribute to the local oral history archive. All community members are welcome to participate and contribute to this endeavor. The evening's free book drawing was won by society member Leslie Rios.
On Thursday, May 9, the historical society will host a free tour of the Beaumont Presbyterian Church – known by many as the “rock church” – at 702 Euclid Ave. The tour and talk will begin at 7 p.m. and is part of the historical society’s “Exploring Our Heritage” program.
Other society events include open museum hours on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; the historical society’s museum is housed in the Beaumont Woman’s Club, 306 E. 6th St. The society’s traveling historical photo exhibit will be on display at the Gilman Ranch Wild West Festival and Western Art Show during the weekend of May 18 and 19; Gilman Ranch is at 1901 W. Wilson St. in Banning. The traveling exhibit will again be displayed at the Beaumont Cherry Festival, May 30 through June 2. The society will also host Banning Mayor Art Welch and City Manager Doug Schulze to discuss historical awareness priorities in the city on Thursday, June 13, at 7 p.m. at the Beaumont Woman’s Club.
