'RIP Jessica:' 3 Juveniles Detained In Fake Funeral Scam
Authorities say "Jessica" was fictitious and "There was no funeral at all."

PERRIS, CA — Three teenagers were caught allegedly soliciting donations to help cover the costs of a bogus funeral, the Riverside County sheriff's officials said Friday. Officers warned the public not to fall prey to similar scams in Perris and across Riverside County.
This month, three juveniles, ages 13, 14 and 17, were canvassing the intersection of Nuevo Road and Perris Boulevard on different occasions seeking money "to help with funeral expenses for a loved one," Sgt. David Marshall said.
The suspects were not identified due to their ages.

Witnesses told the officers that the teens also were seen seeking contributions for health care services needed by a "sick child."
Another conflicting sign read: "Anything Helps" and "RIP Jessica," seeking support for a funeral.

The biggest motorist complaint was the teens stepping in and out of traffic, officials said.
Deputies caught up with the teens Thursday and detained them for questioning.
"It was determined that the deceased individual listed on the sign was fictitious, and there was no funeral at all," Marshall said.
The suspects were arrested for alleged theft by false pretenses but ultimately released to the custody of their parents or guardians. Their signs and money collections were seized as evidence, Marshall said.
"The sheriff's department discourages residents from donating money to anyone with a homemade sign seeking money because, in most instances, it is a scam," he said.
Anyone who witnesses someone soliciting in public rights of way was encouraged to report it to law enforcement.
