MURRIETA, CA — An investigation was underway Thursday into the death of a male inmate at the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta. The case follows at least seven other inmate deaths reported since late April in Riverside County.

At 11:28 p.m. Wednesday, Riverside County sheriff's deputies assigned to the Murrieta jail were called to the inmate's cell. The man, whose identity was not released, was unresponsive so jail personnel began performing life-saving measures on him, according to the sheriff's department.

A Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department crew also responded to assist. Despite the efforts, the inmate died at the scene just after midnight, according to the sheriff's department.

On that same day in May, an inmate was pronounced dead at Indio's John Benoit Detention Center. Sheriff's deputies were notified at 7:43 a.m about an unresponsive male inmate in his cell. All four county jails are operated by the sheriff's department. While Cruz died at an area hospital, it's unclear whether any of the other inmates were alone in their cells.
