Track Athletes Prepare for Cougar Classic

Beaumont to host 12 teams in eighth annual track and field invitational.

Beaumont High’s track and field program will take center stage on Saturday.

The Cougars will host their eighth Cougar Classic track and field invitational at San Gorgonio Middle School. The invitational field will include 12 other schools: Aquinas, Desert Mirage, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Shadow Hills, Silver Valley, Yucaipa, Yucca Valley and Xavier Prep.

The field also includes fellow Mountain Pass League teams from Hemet, San Jacinto and Tahquitz.

“It’s right before league starts,” Beaumont track coach Jessica Cadman said. “This will be a good indicator of what we will be able to do in league.”

Having the MPL teams in the invitational will get a good look at the league’s top teams.

“From looking at the times, I really think it’s going to be a decent meet,” Cadman said. “We found out that Citrus Hill lost to Hemet, which is surprising. I think as long as we have everyone in the right places when we get to Hemet, we should be okay.”

The invitational could be a showcase for Beaumont standouts Andrew Walker and Tricia Cervantes.

Walker is the MPL’s defending champion in the triple jump and second place finisher in the long and high jumps. Cervantes excels in the hurdles and is developing her game in the heptathlon.
