"Charter schools are independent public schools allowed freedom to be more innovative, while being held accountable for improved student achievement." - National Alliance for Public Charters
Choice.
That is probably the most important thing that a Charter school is. It is a choice, an option.
My family recently bought a car. When my wife and I got to the showroom, we had a myriad of choices to explore. We even looked at some that we had not considered in our planning. Different colors, different models - a whole world of cars that would be right for somebody. We looked until we found a car that fit our needs the best.
As it stands, there are few choices in public education. It is like walking into a car showroom and there only being a couple models to choose from. What if these models do not fit your needs? When it comes to cars, you move on to the next showroom. In many school districts there is no "next showroom." You take what they offer because that is all there is.
That is where Charter schools come in. They are another choice, another option. Imagine if you could go into the showroom of schools and have YOUR CHOICE of the type of school your child would be attending. Is your child gifted musically?Maybe they could go to the Charter for the Arts. Is your child interested in the medical field? Maybe they could go to the Medical Academy Charter.
Charter schools offer choice. Charter schools offer options.
It may be that the existing public education system is filling your families needs, and that is terrific! But, not every family has the same needs or desires as your family. That is why a car showroom is filled with so many options; what is a great car for your family may not fit the needs or the desires of the next family who comes in the door. Even if a Charter may not be right for your family, it may be just the thing that your neighbor needs to get their child excited about education.
