Women's Flag Football Program Launches At MSJC

SAN JACINTO, CA — Mt. San Jacinto College is launching an inaugural women's flag football program for the spring 2027 season, expanding athletic opportunities as the sport continues its rapid growth across the state.

The college announced Tuesday that Jonathan Norton will serve as the program's first head coach.

Based at the college's San Jacinto campus, the team will begin training during the fall 2026 semester before competing in its inaugural season next spring.

"We are excited to give the young female student-athletes of our region another opportunity to continue their athletic careers here at MSJC," said Patrick Springer, dean of athletics and student life. "Flag football is by far the fastest-growing female sport in our area, and we believe that enthusiasm will translate into a strong and competitive program."

The California Community College Athletic Association designated women's flag football as an emerging sport beginning in spring 2027, with plans to make it a fully sanctioned championship sport by 2028. The move follows the California Interscholastic Federation's recognition of high school girls flag football during the 2023–24 school year, which drew nearly 20,000 statewide participants last year.

Norton comes to MSJC with nearly a decade of high school coaching experience, currently serving as the head girls flag football coach at Moreno Valley High School. He previously coached defensive positions for the school's tackle football team, in addition to leading track and field and strength conditioning programs.

Before coaching, Norton played NCAA Division I football at Fresno State University, winning two Mountain West Conference championships and making three bowl game appearances with the Bulldogs.

"I take pride in creating structured environments where student-athletes are challenged to grow not only as competitors, but also as students and leaders in their communities," Norton said. "I'm excited to build this program from the ground up."

MSJC will offer an introductory course, PEIC 161-A, during the fall semester to prepare players for competition in the spring.
