63 Citations Issued to Belmont, San Carlos Drivers in Pedestrian Safety Operation

Officers focused on safety violations such as speeding, making illegal turns and failing to yield to pedestrians.

The following announcement was submitted for publication by the San Mateo County Police Chiefs & Sheriff’s Association:

On Monday, Officers and Deputies from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, Belmont Police Department, Colma Police Department, South San Francisco Police Department, and Burlingame Police Department participated in a pedestrian safety operation in the cities of San Carlos and Belmont. Traffic officers focused their efforts in trouble spots in the two cities and conducted saturated traffic enforcement and education to crackdown on drivers and pedestrians who violate traffic laws meant to protect all roadway users.

Officers focused on safety violations such as speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in cross walks, and other dangerous violations. Officers also conducted enforcement and education for observed violations of pedestrians crossing the street illegally or failing to yield to drivers who had the right of way.

Deputies and Officers made 69 stops in the two cities and issued 63 citations. Of the 63 citations issued:

  • 39 citations were issued for pedestrian right of way violations
  • 8 citations were issued for distracted driving violations
  • 4 citations were issued for stop sign violations
  • 3 citations were issued for pedestrians failing to yield the right of way to oncoming cars
  • 3 citations were issued for failing to stop at a red light

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
