Community Rallies For SMC Musician Injured In Crash

The injuries suffered in the crash have impacted the musician's ability to play and teach, according to a fundraiser.

BELMONT, CA — Community members are rallying for a San Mateo County musician and educator who says he was severely injured in a crash earlier this month.

David Long says he was in his car when another driver ran a red light and crashed into him. The crash left him with 10 fractures across his hand and severed tendons, according to Long.

"At Stanford Medical Center, doctors told me my thumb was nearly torn off and might need to be amputated," Long said. "I underwent an 8-hour reconstructive surgery (bone fixation, tendon repair, and nerve work), and thankfully, they were able to save my thumb."

Long is now recovering with lots of medical "hardware holding everything in place." But his injuries have impacted his ability to play and teach, which is how he makes a living.

His recovery journey is also filled with tons of medical bills, he said, so he started a GoFundMe in hopes of getting some financial support.

"I normally wouldn’t ask for help, but given the circumstances, I’m reaching out," Long said in the fundraiser. "Any support, whether through a donation or simply sharing this page, means more than I can express."

In just six days, support has poured in for Long. As of Tuesday afternoon, the GoFundMe has raised $23,930 out of its $26,000 goal.

"The road ahead is long, but there are positive signs, and I’m committed to doing everything I can to recover," Long said. "Thank you for your kindness and support."
