BELMONT, CA — Belmont will celebrate Diwali with music, dance performances and family activities when its annual Festival of Lights event returns Saturday, Nov. 7.
The city and Belmont Library will host the fourth annual celebration, bringing residents together to experience cultural traditions through performances and hands-on activities, according to Belmont's Oct. 23 community newsletter.
Diwali, commonly known as the Festival of Lights, celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. The holiday holds cultural and religious significance for millions of people worldwide, particularly in India and South Asian communities.
Celebrations vary across cultures and religions, including Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism. Many families mark the occasion by lighting oil lamps called diyas, decorating their homes, sharing sweets and gathering with loved ones.
Belmont's event offers an opportunity for people of all ages to take part in the festivities, whether they celebrate Diwali annually or are learning about its traditions for the first time.
Organizers have planned music and dance performances, crafts and refreshments. Admission is free, and the celebration is open to the public.
The event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Twin Pines Senior Center and Meadow.
Residents can find more information on the city's website.
