Belmont Accepting Write-in Candidates for November Election

Nomination papers for two city council seats, city clerk and city treasurer available at City Hall.

Belmont residents interested in appearing as write-in candidates on the November 8 general municipal election ballot may pick up nomination papers at Belmont City Hall.

Two seats on the five-member city council will be up for election, as will the seats of the city clerk (full-time position), and city treasurer. All seats are four-year terms.

The Elections Code provides for a write-in candidacy period, which is open until 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25. In order to qualify, prospective candidates must file the requisite nomination papers, similar to those filed by previously-qualified candidates.

Nomination papers must be obtained in person by the prospective candidate (not his/her representative) from the City Clerk in Suite 375 at City Hall, One Twin Pines Lane, during regular business hours (8 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.).

“Although an appointment to take out nomination papers is not required, it is highly recommended to ensure that I am available to review the paperwork with the candidate. This process can be a little overwhelming, especially for a newcomer,” said Terri Cook, Belmont City Clerk. Candidates must be registered voters in the City of Belmont.

Unlike candidates who filed nomination papers during the regular nomination period, write-in candidates will not have a candidate statement published, nor will their name appear on the written ballot, including vote-by-mail ballots.

For more information or to make an appointment for obtaining a write-in candidacy nomination packet, contact the City Clerk’s office at 650-595-7413, or email the City Clerk at tcook@belmont.gov.
